When I was a first time mum, I struggled to breastfeed my son, comfortably. It took me 6 weeks to muster up the courage to find a lactation consultant in Mackay.
My son was born 10 days past his (estimated) due date, and from early on the midwives knew he needed some extra help. Affectionally known as Slack-Jack, he liked to feed but just didn’t’ want to work for it. We were down in special care nursery using all sort of devices to encourage him feed. We eventually got the hang of using a nipple shield before we let hospital.
The nipple shield worked, until it didn’t. I was a wreck and constantly worried where the shield was at all times because it was the only to way to feed my baby. (7 years and two babies later I have a better mindset around that now). Another mum-friend at the time told me to see Chris Black.

Chris Black is a midwife and lactation consultant at NG GyneHealth Care in Mackay. An amazing and supportive person. By the end of my first appointment Jack had managed to latch successfully for the first time at 6 weeks old. We only needed the one appointment. The feeling of the latch, to be able to feed my baby was freeing. I went on to breastfeed for 15 months.
I have since gone on to have our last baby and guess who our midwife was? Yes, Chris Black. Breastfeeding doesn’t come naturally, well for me anyways. It was like starting all over again. This time we were successfully feeding by his 2nd day. My second child was completely different to my first. He was so much bigger and hungry all the time. I wasn’t looking after myself either to help him and finished breastfeeding around 8 months and moved to formula.
My two boys are very different, with different breast feeding journeys. If there is one thing I can help you with, is if breastfeeding is important to you, please get help asap and don’t be stubborn like me.

If I were to have my time over with Jack, I would have sought help earlier. I was stubborn and thought we would get there without help. It’s a small regret I have. Time wasted worrying over something that was easily fixed. I forever grateful to seeing Chris, a lactation consultant in Mackay who has helped me with both babies.
